G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra was established in 1972 when Aldo Vajra, at the remarkably young age of fifteen, inherited his grandfather's vineyards in Vergne, the highest village of Barolo, and began crafting wines that would help redefine the region's potential.

History

A Modern Vision Rooted in Tradition

Inspired by the ideals of the 1960s and a profound respect for tradition, Aldo Vajra assumed responsibility for his family's vineyards during a challenging time when many were abandoning the hills of Piedmont for factory work. With unwavering dedication, he obtained organic certification in 1971, becoming one of the first in the region to do so. His pioneering spirit, combined with a deep understanding of Barolo's classical values, laid the foundation for what would become one of the region's most respected estates, now continued by his children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro.

The Vision

Guardians of Barolo's Heritage

The Vajra family's philosophy centers on an extraordinary attention to detail and a profound respect for their land and cultural heritage. Their approach marries traditional wisdom with gentle innovation, always seeking to highlight the unique voices of their high-altitude vineyards. In their striking underground winery, designed to maximize energy efficiency while honoring traditional practices, every decision is made with precision and care. From their groundbreaking work with indigenous varieties to their meticulous grape selection, the family's dedication to excellence shines through in their thoughtful, almost poetic approach to winemaking, where each vintage is seen as a new chapter in their ongoing dialogue with nature.

The Wines

The Dawn of Barolo Excellence

We proudly feature the 2020 G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe, a wine that brilliantly captures the essence of Piedmont's noble Nebbiolo grape. This Wine Spectator Top 100 selection (#9) embodies the Vajra family's commitment to crafting wines of both power and grace. Named 'Albe,' meaning 'dawns' in Italian, this Barolo masterfully blends fruit from three different exposures that greet the morning sun. Like a symphony that harmoniously combines distinct voices, this wine showcases the complexity and elegance that have become hallmarks of the Vajra style. The high-altitude vineyards contribute to its remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity, while traditional winemaking methods ensure authentic expression of both variety and terroir, creating a wine that speaks eloquently of its origins in the hills of Barolo.
