Real Companhia Velha

Celebrating over 265 years of continued production, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal.

Introduction

History & Tradition

Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Winery, is the oldest wine company in Portugal, operating uninterruptedly since 1756 in the service of Port Wine. Established by royal charter under King D. José I, it was initially created to regulate Port wine production and trade, playing a crucial role in defining the Douro wine region's boundaries and quality standards. Over the centuries, the company expanded its influence, acquiring significant vineyards and cellars in the Douro Valley. Today, Royal Oporto continues to be a leading producer of Port and Douro wines, blending centuries-old traditions with modern winemaking techniques to create renowned vintages. Its longevity and continuous operation for over 260 years underscore its importance in Portugal's rich winemaking heritage.

Vinification

Sleeping Giants

Port wine production begins with harvesting grapes, traditionally crushed by foot in large granite troughs called lagares. Fermentation is halted early by adding grape spirit (aguardente), resulting in a sweet, high-alcohol wine. This fortification process preserves the wine's natural sugars and fruity flavors. The wine then ages in oak barrels or vats, with the aging period varying depending on the style of port being made. Some ports are aged for decades, developing complex flavors and aromas, while others are bottled young to preserve their fresh, fruity character.
